Contract terms determine what a quoted price means and what happens on exercise. The comparison below was checked on September 23, 2026. It uses specific conventional products, not a claim that every option in an asset class has identical terms. Adjusted and flexible contracts can differ.
Compare the deliverable first
| Contract | Quote multiplier | Exercise | Exercise result / reference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard listed stock option | $100 per point | American | 100 underlying shares; adjusted contracts differ |
| Standard SPY ETF option | $100 per point | American | 100 ETF shares |
| Traditional AM SPX | $100 per point | European | Cash, special opening settlement calculation |
| PM SPXW | $100 per point | European | Cash, prescribed closing settlement calculation |
| XSP | $100 per point | European | Cash on an index scaled to one-tenth SPX |
| E-mini S&P 500 Wednesday weekly option | $50 per point | European | Position in the specified underlying ES futures contract |
For exact terms, use OCC equity specifications, Cboe’s index/ETF comparison and CME’s option-series comparison. Other futures-option series can have different exercise styles and expiration procedures.
Size is more than the multiplier
A premium of 2.00 costs $200 with a 100 multiplier and $100 with a 50 multiplier, before fees. Equal premium cost does not imply equal exposure. At illustrative index levels of SPX 5,000 and XSP 500, one point of intrinsic settlement is still $100 for either, but their underlying index scales differ by ten.
Likewise, a share-delivery option is not equivalent operationally to a cash-settled index option even if their directional exposure is similar. One may create shares and distribution obligations; another creates a cash settlement. A futures position created on exercise has its own margin and subsequent daily P/L.
Separate exercise style from trading access
European exercise restricts exercise timing, not ordinary exchange closing trades during the series’ trading life. AM and PM identify settlement conventions, not simply the time printed in a brokerage expiry label. Traditional AM SPX ordinarily stops trading before the day its opening settlement is calculated; expiring SPXW ordinarily trades on its expiration day. Verify holidays and current exchange/broker cutoffs.
Before combining contracts
Check underlying reference, currency, multiplier, deliverable, maturity and settlement time. A hedge using another instrument can leave basis and timing risk. Never infer tax treatment solely from cash settlement or from this table; the separate U.S. tax guide explains why classification needs its own review.
