The names describe when you can exercise
American and European describe exercise styles, not where a contract trades. An American style option can be exercised before expiration under its contract rules. A European style option can be exercised only at the prescribed expiry.
You can still trade before expiry
European exercise does not mean you must hold the option until the end. You can generally buy or sell it in the market while it trades, subject to liquidity and trading hours. Closing the option is a different action from exercising it.
Early exercise changes seller risk
A seller of an American style option faces possible early assignment. For stock calls, dividends can influence that decision. A European style option removes early exercise risk, but its seller still faces market losses and settlement obligations at expiration.
Timing is separate from delivery
Exercise style does not tell you whether settlement uses cash, shares, or futures. SPX combines European exercise with cash settlement. Standard SPY options combine American exercise with shares. Other products use different combinations, so verify both rules independently.
Two checks, every time
Ask when exercise is allowed, and what happens when it occurs. Then check the last trading time and broker cutoff. These details can change the position you hold afterward, even when two options have similar payoff diagrams.
