Same broad market, different underlying
SPX options reference the S and P five hundred index. SPY options reference shares in the ETF that tracks that index. They offer related market exposure, but the option contracts are not interchangeable. Start with the underlying and the contract scale.
Compare equivalent size
Both standard contracts use a one hundred multiplier, but their underlying numbers differ. If SPX is six thousand and SPY is six hundred in a hypothetical snapshot, their reference notionals are six hundred thousand and sixty thousand dollars per contract.
Cash versus shares
SPX options settle in cash and use European exercise. Standard SPY options settle through ETF shares and use American exercise. An assigned SPY put can leave you owning shares. An SPX put settlement creates a cash debit or credit instead.
Check the exact expiration
SPX has different expiration series, including morning and afternoon settlement. Do not assume the last trading time or settlement calculation matches SPY. SPY distributions can affect early exercise incentives, while SPX European exercise prevents early assignment.
Choose by mechanics and exposure
Compare equivalent notional size, premium, liquidity, fees, settlement, and broker requirements. Roughly ten SPY contracts may resemble one SPX contract in scale, but that is not an exact hedge. Tax treatment depends on product and investor circumstances.
