Start with what the option references

Crypto options can reference a coin price, a crypto futures contract, or shares in a crypto fund. These are different underlyings. A Bitcoin theme does not mean the contracts share the same multiplier, settlement currency, or exercise rules.

A dollar settled illustration

Imagine a call with a sixty thousand dollar strike and exposure to one tenth of a bitcoin. At a seventy thousand dollar settlement price, its intrinsic cash value would be one thousand dollars in a simple dollar settled contract, before premium.

The currency of payment matters

Subtract a four hundred dollar premium and this illustration has six hundred dollars profit before costs. But a coin settled or inverse product may use a different payoff formula. Do not apply a dollar formula without checking the settlement denomination.

The venue changes the mechanics

For example, some CME crypto options exercise into futures, while certain products settle financially. Other venues have their own margin and settlement rules. Trading hours, liquidity, custody arrangements, and counterparty exposure can differ materially across markets.

Read the contract before the ticker

Verify the underlying, size, payoff formula, settlement currency, exercise style, and venue protections. A familiar call or put shape is only the beginning. The contract and collateral rules determine the actual cash flows and risks.
