Identify the underlying quote

Interest rate options can reference bond futures, short term rate futures, or other rate products. First ask what the option underlying actually quotes. A call benefits from a rise in that quoted underlying, which may correspond to a fall in rates.

A rate futures convention

A common short term rate futures convention is one hundred minus the implied rate. In a simplified illustration, a four percent rate corresponds to a ninety six futures quote. A three percent rate corresponds to ninety seven.

The direction can reverse

If you expect rates to fall, that quotation convention suggests a higher futures price. A call on that futures contract can express that view. For many bond futures, falling yields also tend to support prices, but the exact sensitivity differs.

Tick values and expiry matter

Convert quote changes using the actual tick value and contract specification. Option expiry, underlying futures expiry, and the rate measurement period may be different. Exercise can create a futures position with margin obligations, depending on the product.

Do not confuse this with rho

Rho measures an option sensitivity to its pricing model interest rate input. An interest rate option is a product whose underlying itself reflects rates. Those are different ideas. Identify the quote direction before choosing a call or put.
