Weekly versus traditional monthly expirations

Weekly options provide expiration dates in addition to a product’s traditional monthly cycle. Many U.S. monthly equity-option expirations fall on the third Friday, subject to the exchange calendar. Weekly listings provide more date choices on eligible products; some products also have expirations on multiple weekdays.

“Weekly” does not mean every contract has exactly seven days of life when purchased. Several future weekly dates may already be listed. A weekly contract with one day remaining is 1DTE, and one expiring today is 0DTE. A monthly contract reaches those same stages.

Which products have frequent expirations?

Availability is product-specific. Cboe’s Available Weeklys directory is a starting point; the current chain and exchange calendar identify the actual series. Do not assume every equity, ETF, index or futures option offers daily expiration.

SPX options include SPXW series with expirations across the trading week. Confirm the root and settlement designation rather than treating every entry in an SPX chain as identical. This example does not establish the schedule for other index products.

What a shorter cycle changes

Calls and puts retain their basic rights and obligations. A nearer expiration gives a directional move less time to occur. For otherwise comparable contracts, less remaining time generally means less time value, but implied volatility and scheduled events can alter comparisons across dates.

Short-dated options allow a position to be aligned closely with an event, but they may expire before the anticipated move. A correct longer-term view can still produce a full premium loss in the selected short-term contract.

Compare quotes for the exact expiration and strike. Volume in a popular underlying does not guarantee a narrow bid/ask spread in every weekly option or every leg of a combination.

Exercise and settlement still depend on the product

U.S. equity and ETF weekly options generally use American-style exercise and share delivery. Index products can use different rules. “Weekly” by itself tells you neither the exercise style nor whether settlement is in shares or cash.
