An option on fund shares
An ETF option references shares in an exchange traded fund. The fund might track a broad index, a sector, bonds, or another exposure. The option is on the fund shares, not a direct contract on every asset in its portfolio.
Familiar premium arithmetic
For a standard U.S. ETF option with a one hundred share multiplier, a three dollar premium means three hundred dollars per contract. A one hundred dollar strike represents ten thousand dollars of share purchase or sale value on exercise.
Diversified does not mean risk free
A broad market ETF spreads exposure across companies, but can still fall sharply. Sector, leveraged, and inverse funds have different behavior. Understand what the fund tracks before assuming its options behave like a simple broad stock market position.
Shares and early assignment
Standard U.S. ETF options generally allow American exercise and settle through shares. Fund distributions can affect early exercise incentives. A cash settled index option tracking a similar market has different exercise and settlement mechanics.
Compare the contract, not just the theme
Check the fund exposure, multiplier, liquidity, distributions, and settlement. Two products can track a similar index but leave different positions after expiration. Match the contract mechanics to the exposure you intend to hold.
